Trans-Formation

While doing my masters I've been giving a lot of thought to briefs that I did in my undergrad. My process, how I personalised them, disrupted them and the mistakes I made. I can always do better. I'm considering how all this can inform the work I'm doing given the change in environment. This project was a third year project from my degree called Transformation. The objective was to take two old garments de-construct them and produce a collection based on each piece. I personalised this by creating a narrative for the execution of the illustrations. I did some research into some of Leigh Bowery's work and how he re-appropriated female gender stereotypes by exaggerating proportions and changing the silhouette. I was thinking along the lines of 'Trans-gender' and 're-Formation' which fit nicely for me into what was for the most part a technical brief.

                                            

 

A Multidimensional Construct of the Self

According to Sharon Gill, Body Image is "a multidimensional construct of the self, consisting of how individuals think, feel and behave regarding their own physical attributes. It comprises the various cognitions an individual has about his/her body, as well as the behaviours he/she engages in as a means of maintaining and enhancing physical appearance"

Below is the Thesis I wrote for my Bachelors Degree accompanied by its Wordle(the bigger the word the more it's used.) This was a difficult endeavor. Due not only to a particularly heavy studio workload but also the challenge of writing a body of work such as this and how the breadth of research and its subsequent writing has challenged the prism through which I view myself, the world and my place in it. I wrote most of it while I should have been doing studio work or sleeping. It is one of the pieces I left my degree with that I'm most proud of.

Between The Lines

I was at an exhibition of work by the Limerick School of Art and Design Degree year Visual Communications students in South Studios Dublin on thursday. It was a one night only show to run adjascent to and was part of the the launch of Offset Weekend. The show was entitled Between The Lines

"Between the Lines is an interpretation of truth, exploring thirty-six diverse ‘truths’, from old wives tales and statistics, to psychic numbing and conspiracy theories. The title of the exhibition is a reference to both the concept behind the exhibition and the point of transition between student designer and practicing professional."

The Exhibition was a very successfull showcase of some excellent work by the fourth years in a really nice space. Congratulations and kudos to them all on their hard work.

Showdown-in Neo-Tokyo

Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Fashion Design, Graduate Collection: Mark Dempsey

This collection is based on the 1988 anime movie named Akira. Akira is a neo-apocalyptic 'Manga' movie that is set in the future gangland's of Neo-Tokyo. This collection mimics the complexity of the relationship between the two main characters in the movie through the use of dynamic pattern making and complex intersecting seaming. With the use of vivid colour to highlight the intense and explosive moments in the story, I have created a high end street savvy collection using Japanese pattern making methods in conjunction with elements worked on the stand.

Over-Worked

I'm currently working on my degree collection. I plan on putting up more information (i.e concept, title, motivation etc) about it following the fashion show. Its an ongoing developmental process, with very little set in stone or decided upon thus far. These are shots of toils that have been worked on. I am now embarking on the process of constructing a number of the actual garments. I have six weeks to complete my six looks. Something tells me this is gonna be an experience I either wont be able to recall or one I will never forget!
